The observation that groups victimized by prejudice are more prejudiced than their persecutors is actually quite true. Collectivist and tribalistic group-thinking is common to lesser-developed humanity. They don’t get out much and strangers and their ways freak them out, even though brief encounters can be quite hospitable. And those less-developed (i.e. more primitive) portions of humanity are typically humanity’s most oppressed, as they are vulnerable to more technologically and socially advanced groups. Bigotry becomes chronic and second nature. Group revenge and demonization rhetoric soars.

During the Occupy Wall Street protests, there was a drum circle happening at one end of Zuccotti Park nearly 24 hours a day. I hated that drum circle, and I wasn’t the only one. The people who lived in the neighborhood complained constantly about the noise, and people who were trying to hold meetings or discussions in the park could barely hear each other. What I am trying to say here is, dont hate people, hate how humans have evolved into becoming people.

Since oppressed groups tend to emerge from pre-existing ignorant primitive communities, narrow-minded world views worthy of backward isolated communities are common. For such groups, small things matter most, and concepts like honor, ritual, and rhetoric take on ridiculous levels of importance, far more than practical advancement. Women, and young girls especially, typically get the very short end of the stick, as in most primitive societies. Grand things, and long lasting things are not of great importance partly because of the fatalism described above.

What we fill our minds with has to affect how we view the world and others. At what point did so many people stop experiencing things outside the bubble of like-mindedness they created and nurtured? And just because we can explain some of this doesn’t make it right or easy to change. Be careful and don’t mistake your bubble for some sense of safety either. It can often be an echo chamber that narrows the mind and actually makes the world more unsafe. Separation can lead to detachment and soon we have no connection with anyone that’s not similar to us.
